Class Description

Create your own 3D printed custom battle robot using CAD and VR sculpting tools—complete with wild defenses like flippers and spinners. Students will learn to wire and code their bots using Arduino, then control them via iPads or remote controls. Test your bot’s skills in a team-based robot soccer match (at the conclusion of AUTUMN Session). This session will prepare students for further upgrades and advanced battle challenges in the following Winter session. Creativity meets controlled chaos in this action-packed fusion of art, tech, and strategy.

Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about

  • Designing, assembling, and operating a functional robot by applying hands-on skills in circuitry, using tools like Dremels and soldering irons, and integrating Arduino-based components;
  • Learning to code using the Arduino IDE to program robot behaviors and successfully control movement and functions through an iPad or remote system;
  • Applying problem-solving and iteration skills to troubleshoot and improve your bot in collaborative team settings, especially during preparation for the robot soccer match;
  • Using both CAD and VR sculpting tools to design and create custom 3D-printable defenses that are functional and unique to your bot’s strategy;
  • Selecting the right digital tool for the task, understanding when to use programs like Nomad Sculpt or ShapeLab for organic designs, or Tinkercad, OnShape, FreeCAD, Luma AI Genie, or Arduino software for more precise or functional components;
  • The art of the peer critique and give peer critiques on the progress of student work;
  • Opportunities and potential resources on career pathways;
  • How to distribute, exhibit, and promote artwork for a variety of audiences.

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects

  • Students will build a core chassis—a fully functional, remotely controlled base with wheels and customizable outputs for adding features.
  • They will design and 3D print at least two unique defense mechanisms (such as flippers, spinners, or custom inventions) to personalize and enhance their battle bots.
  • Throughout the session, students will collaborate with teammates to plan and execute strategies for a culminating robot soccer match, testing their bot’s performance in real-time.
