Class Description

Level up your musicianship using cutting-edge tools like Rocksmith and Paradiddle VR, where you can practice playing instruments in a fun, interactive way. Then, take your skills to the next level by recording your own music and learning how to mix and edit using Reaper DAW on iMacs. Whether you’re jamming solo or collaborating with others, this class is all about making music your way with pro-level tools and tech!

Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about

  • Building instrumental fluency by practicing and performing at least three songs on your chosen instrument (guitar, drums, etc.) using Rocksmith or Paradiddle VR, aiming for 90% accuracy or higher;
  • Developing virtual music fluency by navigating a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), setting up an audio interface, and confidently recording, monitoring, and editing your own tracks in Reaper;
  • Incorporating both virtual and real instruments into your recordings using MIDI controllers, VR tools, and live audio input to expand your creative range;
  • Applying essential mixing and mastering techniques such as leveling, EQ, and compression to produce a polished final track;
  • Understanding and using basic music theory concepts (like chord progressions, rhythm, and melody) to compose or improve your original music;
  • The art of the peer critique and give peer critiques on the progress of student work;
  • Opportunities and potential resources on career pathways;
  • How to distribute, exhibit, and promote artwork for a variety of audiences.

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects

  • Individually or collaboratively, students will include a recorded original music composition (minimum 1 minute), created using Reaper DAW. 
  • Students will also contribute to a group class cover, recording separate instrument or vocal tracks to be mixed into a unified piece.
  • To showcase their work, students will create a group or solo music video, combining audio and visual elements for a polished final presentation.
