Class Description

Lights, camera, action! Building on your story development skills, you’ll now focus on bringing your film to life. Master advanced camera techniques, learn to direct actors, and gain experience managing a film set. This session is all about the excitement of production as you shoot your film scenes using professional equipment. By the end of this session, you’ll have completed principal photography on your short film and begun the editing process.

Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about

  • Students will synthesize a variety of filmmaking skills (writing, producing, camera operation, lighting, directing, sound recording, some editing) to produce  a creative, collaborative narrative film
  • Students will generate and map out ideas through story outline, treatment, and scriptwriting
  • Students will gain confidence in their own voice and practice communication skills as they negotiate ideas and collaborate within a group setting
  • Students will demonstrate technical proficiency with professional equipment (iMac computers, Canon and Sony mirrorless and DSLR cameras, multi-channel audio mixers and recorders) and the most current video and audio editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition)
  • Students will navigate working as a production unit as they craft creative content that fulfills client needs while meeting set deadlines
  • Students will refine their time management, creative problem solving, team building, adaptability and leadership skills as they complete project deadlines with other students;
  • The art of the peer critique and give peer critiques on the progress of student work;
  • Opportunities and potential resources on career pathways;
  • How to distribute, exhibit, and promote artwork for a variety of audiences.

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects

  • At the end of this session, students will have produced several short “mini” films, and also one 10-20 minute narrative film.
  • This includes delivering a final script, filming all scenes and “cutaways” needed for a final film, and recorded any additional audio (automatic dialog replacement, ambient sound, sound effects).
  • The final edit of the film will not be complete until the final school year session, but there will be several “mini films” completed to finality, and a longer 10-20 minute film will be fully produced, meaning all scenes and accessory content will be shot and recorded.
