Class Description

In this three day workshop, students will learn the basics of how to make a short narrative film, including creating an original story, recording scenes, and editing the final production. Students will generate story ideas and make a production plan. They will use video and audio equipment to film scenes. Finally, they will edit the scenes together to create a finished film.

Learning Objectives: In this class, students will learn

  • How to create a short narrative film in a short period of time 
  • The three phases of film creation: Pre-production, production, and post-production. 
  • How to write a short script using the essential elements of  story: plot, setting, characters, theme,  conflict, point of view, and tone 
  • How to use video and audio equipment in film production
  • How to film cinematically, including making choices in composition and point of view
  • How to record audio for film
  • How to edit a short film, including scene assembly, transitions, sound design

  • Apple iMacs
  • Cameras: Canon 6D and Canon t7i
  • Camera batteries, chargers, and SD cards
  • Tascam DR-70D audio recorder
  • Sennheiser M600 shotgun mic
  • Auray boom pole
  • Rode Wireless mics, transmitter and receiver
  • GVM light kit
  • Green Screen
  • Production slate
  • DJI Ronin gimbal
  • Manfrotto tripods with fluid heads
  • Padcaster tripods

Software

  • Apple iMac
  • Google Docs (for scriptwriting), shotlist, storyboarding, and pre-production notes

Deliverables

  • The course will conclude with a complete short film (under 5 minutes) and film promotional materials, including a movie poster
