Class Description
In this fast-paced, creativity-fueled class, you’ll design your own story-driven animations—no templates, no limits—just your imagination in motion. Learn the secrets behind motion and timing, and discover how movement, contrast, repetition, and form can make your art explode with energy. You’ll craft bold visual stories without saying a word! (Student animations will be scored by students in a MAPS Music Production WINTER class.) It’s your vision, your voice—animated.
Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about
- Applying animation techniques using digital tool Procreate;
- Understanding the foundational principles of motion and timing in animation;
- Exploring and utilizing key elements of art and principles of design—specifically movement, repetition, emphasis, contrast, and form—to create dynamic visual compositions;
- Developing skills in visual storytelling by effectively communicating ideas and narratives without the use of words;
- Exploring a different animation principle or concept while expressing your own creative voice for each animation;
- The art of the peer critique and give peer critiques on the progress of student work;
- Opportunities and potential resources on career pathways;
- How to distribute, exhibit, and promote artwork for a variety of audiences.

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects
- The final product will be a collection of 5-10 short, custom animations (each 5-10 seconds long) created in Procreate, showcasing the student’s creativity and understanding of basic animation principles.
- Students will retain a final folder containing their finished animations in multiple file formats—.GIF and .MP4—to ensure compatibility across various platforms and devices.
