Class Description

This class will introduce a variety of techniques and common practices for creating interesting characters and environments. Topics to be covered include shape language, style development, color moods, and the basics of composition. These skills apply to professional fields such as comics, video games, and animated TV or movies. Additionally, the process of formatting and organizing digital files for various purposes will be covered.

Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about

  • Exporting, managing, and organizing digital art files
  • Character conceptualization for fictional entertainment media
  • Methods of finding research  reference material
  • Basic anatomy drawing
  • Time management skills
  • Shape language
  • Color moods
  • Gesture & posture
  • The fundamental principles and key components of character design
  • Creating sketches, drawings, and illustrations with graphic software
  • Using inspiration in your work without copying what’s already been done
  • Brainstorming sketches to discover the characters in your imagination
  • Presenting characters and story ideas with other audiences

Equipment

  • iPads and Apple pencils.
  • iMacs
  • Optional: personal sketchbook and non digital drawing supplies (think pencil or pen)
  • Your brain

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects

  • A functional character sheet, including sets of notes
