Class Description
Pick up a camera and start seeing the world differently. Photography is a form of communication used to capture and share a variety of stories, from world events to personal explorations. The purpose of a photograph is not just the image captured, but also the context of that image and the events that took place before and after it. This class is designed to help you build and hone fundamental photography skills so that more time and attention can be focused on storytelling in future projects. In this two-day workshop you will learn the fundamentals of digital photography and develop your own eye as a photographer. No experience required, just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about
- The fundamentals of digital photography;
- The history of photographic technology and how film-era terms apply to digital photography;
- How to confidently adjust exposure using the exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO;
- How to apply the Sunny 16 rule in real-world outdoor shooting scenarios;
- Basic composition techniques including the rule of thirds, layering, and the use of light and shadow;
- The art of the peer critique and how to give constructive feedback on the progress of student work;
- Opportunities and potential resources for career pathways in photography;
- How to distribute, exhibit, and promote artwork for a variety of audiences.

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects
- Upon completion of this class, you will have built a collection of reference photos that showcase how to utilize and manipulate different photography techniques to achieve a specific outcome. These are not portfolio pieces, rather they are working products for you to refer back to for future projects.
