Unlock your imagination in our exciting “CREATE with New Tech 3D” class! Dive into the world of 3D printing and design your visionary creation – whether it’s a unique musical instrument, a futuristic piece of apparel, or an innovative design. Learn to use cutting-edge tools like Tinkercad, shapr3D, Shapelab and Gravity Sketch VR sculpting to bring your ideas to life. By the end of this session, you’ll have a tangible, 3D-printed masterpiece that showcases your creativity and technical skills. Join us for a hands-on adventure where art meets the latest 3D technology!
This is the first session of three, each building on the last. The full afterschool year supports students in exploring the exciting intersection of art and technology, designed as a cohesive journey from creation, transformation to performance.
Learning Objectives: in this class, students will learn about:
- Both traditional and digital art techniques, focusing on the fundamentals of design of everyday objects to create objects of their choosing;
- Basic 2D to 3D conversion skills for use in laser engraving and 3D printing;
- Developing proficiency in CAD design in both virtual reality and desktop/tablet computer use;
- Techniques to customize a visual design using the cutting edge technology of AR/VR headsets through 3D modeling;
- Utilizing Gravity Sketch to sculpt a virtual design in VR headsets which incorporate their original design and explores the uses of AR mixed reality to observe their designs in the real world;
- Explore ethical considerations of current AI creative use with weekly ethics discussion topics;
- The art of the peer critique and give peer critiques on the progress of student work;
- Opportunities and potential resources on career pathways;
- How to distribute, exhibit, and promote artwork for a variety of audiences.

Deliverables: Students and Class Projects
- Class Project: Tinkercad group design of “Basic Headphones”
- Deconstruct and scavenge parts from existing electronics and redesign a system to use same parts in a new more personalized way with CAD and 3D printing;
- Customized headphone set with 3D printed case;
- Individual Student Project: portfolio of digital and tangible 3D designs, from basic print to masterpiece!
- 2 designs, 2 different levels of programs (digital files)
- Initial CAD design and 3D print of their custom design, created using VR/AR
- Elaboration of that individual choice design into a “3D printed masterpiece”
